Indian Bamboo Flute Bansuri

Indian bamboo flute or Bansuri is one of the oldest musical instrument. Bansuri is a woodwind instrument which is side blown. It's also mentioned in Natya Shastra and in Vedic literature.

Lord Krishna is famous not only for Bhagwat Geeta but also for his mystical bansuri. A modern bansuri is made up of a hollow bamboo with one blowing hole and 6 or 7 holes for finger, in various sizes from 6 inches to 40 inches.

How Bansuri is made

First a bamboo is selected for which some of important conditions are -
1. Must be of definite age.
2. Different scales of flute are made of different diameter of bamboo.
3. Diameter to length ratio must be exact.

Now when the Bamboo is selected, first iron rods are heated than blowing hole is made.

Than sound is checked and matched with help of frquency meter, harmonium , tanpura etc.

When we get exact sound next hole is made.

Sometimes holes are also marked with old reference and holes are made with help of heating iron rods.

Flutes costs ranges from ₹10 to ₹30000 depending on its quality and brands.
Sometimes can get a premium quality flute without wasting fortune and sometimes you di not get best flute for you even after spending huge sum of money. So important question is why the tuned flute matters.

Why to buy tuned flutes.
Flutes are tuned with A440hz. Does it really matters to buy a costly flute for learning or we can learn from cheap flutes or cheap bansuri than shifting to costly ones like we learn bicycle or car from old one and than shift to new ones.
Truth is for beginner a tuned bansuri is necessary as you have to train your ear. If you know to play than you will be able to adjust accordingly but as a beginners it's difficult to focus on blowing as well as on fingers and also on ears. Let's take ab example of a kid who started his school recently. First he land alphabets by listening and imitating. Than slowly he learns write also. Gradually he learns to words than sentences and learns to write them. When his concentration power is increased with training his reading and writing speed is increased. Swami Vivekanand is worth quoting, his concentration power was so high that he was able to read whole page in one blink. Let's come to our topic Bansuri, you don't have to be Swami Vivekanand to learn Bansuri, you just need a well tuned flute and a music Guru.
So I have told you about why you have to use tuned Bansuri if you are planning to learn.

Now the question is where to find tuned flute or bansuri?

Where to find a good bansuri ?
If you are living in India it's easy for you to find a good flute. Easiest way is to visit flutemaker and buy from workshop. Almost every flute maker can make a tuned flute if you visit their workshop. Bansuri is different from others instruments like  Piano or guitar or Dholak ot tabla where you have to press the keys or vibrate strings to produce sound. In bansuri you have to blow air from your mouth. The way you hold also changes the pitch.

Next important question is is it really necessary to buy costly flutes if cheap substitutes are available.

Can we learn from cheap bansuri also?
Cost of flute doesn't matter if it's tuned. If you are able to find it in ₹10 than also you can learn. Price doesn't matter.
